A blocked toilet is a fairly common issue, but luckily, it can often be resolved quite easily. This guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to unblock a toilet using some basic tools and protective equipment.
Essential Tools & Equipment
Step 1: Prepare Your Tools
Make sure you have all the necessary tools and protective equipment ready. Put on your safety glasses and rubber gloves.
Step 2: Do Not Flush
The first rule when dealing with a blocked toilet is not to flush. Flushing usually causes more problems than it solves, so it is best to try to remove the blockage first.
Step 3: Check For Obvious Blockages
Place your hand in the toilet bowl and check to see if anything has fallen in and got stuck in the toilet bend.
Step 4: Plunge The Toilet
Lift the toilet seat and put the plunger in deep enough to create a seal. Plunge in and out gently, being careful at this stage to stop any sewage coming over the side of the toilet.
Step 5: Remove The Waste
Retrieve all the waste out of the toilet, place it in the black bag, and remove it from your home.
Step 6: Test The Toilet
Plunging the toilet should clear the blockage, but to make sure it’s all working again, place some toilet paper into the bowl and flush to check it clears. If it doesn’t, use the plunger again – this time with more force to get the blockage out. If the blockage is particularly stubborn, it may be time to call a professional.
