What is a filament bulb?

Filament bulbs are another name for the classic ‘Edison’ light bulbs of a time gone by. These used a super-heated wire or coil to produce light, and are remembered for the orangey glow they gave off.

The difference between classic filament bulbs and today’s filament bulbs is that we now use a chain of LEDs to bring light to the wire or coil. This makes the bulb vastly more energy efficient, and also means that modern filament bulbs last longer.
