What Do Routers Do?
The word ‘rout’ means to hollow out, and this is one of their primary functions. While they specialise in making patterns in wood, creating edges and cut-outs, their many uses include carving dado rails, picture frames and cabinetry, or shaping patterns for doors, chair rails, windows, bannisters and baseboards.
What Are the Different Types of Routing Tools?
Plunge routers allow controlled vertical movement during cutting. This is ideal for precision tasks such as fluting, edge profiling, engraving and grooving. Fixed base routers are good all-rounders and offer a stable foundation for jobs that need a steady hand. The main difference between the two is the position of the cutter. The former plunges into the wood while the latter is fixed in position. Biscuit jointers are a type of router used to make holes and grooves in wood and create joints to bind them together.
