A beautifully painted front door is not just a statement piece; it's the first impression of your home. Whether you're revamping an old door or adding a splash of colour to a new one, our guide to how to paint a front door will walk you through the process, ensuring a professional finish.

Essential Tools & Equipment

As well as the tools and equipment listed below, you will also need a bucket of water to dilute the sugar soap.

Step 1: Prepare the Door

  • Remove any door furniture such as door knobs or handles, knockers, and escutcheons to keep them clean and in good conditions – you may even want to replace these completely for a completely new look.

  • Clean the door using sugar soap and a sponge. Dilute the sugar soap with water with a ratio of 1 part sugar soap and 10 parts water.

  • Use a mould cleaner to remove any mould that may have built up – especially if the door is old.

Step 2: Sand the Door

  • Remove paint blisters or flakes using a flat scraper

  • Next, sand the door with medium grit sandpaper if it's in poor condition.

  • Follow up with a fine grit sandpaper to create a slightly textured surface for better paint and filler adhesion.

Step 3: Fill and Prime the Door

  • Fill any small cracks or blemishes with a wood or multi-purpose filler.

  • For larger areas or rotten wood, use a two-part or big hole filler according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • After the filler has cured, sand it down and clean off the dust with a cloth.

  • Apply a layer of primer over the surface of the door with a paintbrush to prepare it for painting.

Step 4: Paint the Door

  • Apply your paint of choice using even strokes in the same direction.

  • Paint the panels first and avoid overloading the brush with paint to prevent drips.

  • For water-based topcoats, use a synthetic brush; for oil-based, a natural bristle brush.

  • A mini roller can be used if your door is completely flat.

Step 5: Applying the Second Coat

  • After the first coat has dried, apply the second coat for a uniform finish.

  • This ensures maximum durability and a long-lasting look.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

  • Once the second coat is dry, remove any painter's tape and reattach the door furniture.
