A well-maintained deck can transform your outdoor space, offering a perfect setting for relaxing and entertaining.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of protecting your decking from the elements. This is ideal if you have a new, uncoated deck that you want to maintain in its pristine condition, or if you're reviving an old decking.

Essential Tools & Equipment

You may also need cleaning materials to prepare your decking. For more information, check out our guide on How To Clean Decking.

Step 1: Prepare the Decking and Surrounding Area

  • Before applying the protector, it's crucial to prepare your deck.

  • For a new deck, clean it thoroughly and remove any pre-treatment.

  • If it's oiled or stained, strip it back. Our guide on How To Strip Decking will help.

  • Ensure the deck is dry and the weather is favorable for application.

  • Cover any surrounding plants or grass with a dust sheet to avoid them getting damaged.

Step 2: Apply the Decking Stain

  • Shake the tin of decking protector thoroughly and pour into a plastic container or paint tray.

  • Using a thick brush, work the protector into the wood grain - working 3-4 boards at a time will help you know which boards you've applied protector to and avoid overlaps.

  • Ensure even distribution, avoiding pooling or ponding.

  • After 15 minutes, check if there are any uneven patches and redistribute pooling protector to drier areas.

Step 3: Apply the Second Coat

  • After two hours, or according to the manufacturer's instructions, apply the second coat in the same manner as the first, ensuring even coverage and absorption into the wood.

Step 4: Move Furniture Back

  • After 24 hours of drying, your deck is ready to be used.

  • Move any furniture back and enjoy your fresh new decking!
