1. Back to How To Guides

Removing paint from a carpet doesn't have to be difficult.  With the right instructions and tools, it can be done effectively, preserving the look and feel of your carpet.

Whether it's a splash of paint from a recent renovation or a big spill, this guide will run through the steps to remove both water-based and oil-based paint from your carpet, leaving you with a clean and spotless finish.

Essential Tools & Equipment

As well as the below, you'll also need some dish soap and a bucket of warm water.

Step 1: Scrape Up Any Excess Paint

  • Begin by using a scraper to carefully remove any excess or dried on paint from the carpet.

  • Start from the outer edges of the spill and move inwards toward the centre.

Step 2: Wash with Soapy Water or White Spirit

  • Mix warm water with a few drops of dishwashing soap in a bowl.
  • Dip a white towel into the solution and blot the paint stain.
  • Continue this process until the paint dissolves and is lifted away from the carpet fibres.
  • If the paint is oil-based, soapy water alone won't suffice. Apply white spirit to a white towel and blot the stained area.

  • Continue to blot the affected area until the paint lifts off.

Step 3: Rinse and Dry

  • After treating the stain, rinse the area with clean water.
  • Use a fresh white towel to blot the area dry, removing any residual cleaning solution.
